What's actually involved
Ontario outages are not usually long — until they are. An ice storm in January with a heat pump you cannot run and a sump pump you cannot power turns into burst pipes and a flooded basement very quickly.
A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch takes over within seconds, whether you are home or not.

You can, and plenty of people do, but never plug a portable generator into a wall outlet to back-feed the house. That energises the utility line outside and can kill the crew restoring your power. If you own a portable, let us fit a proper inlet and interlock.
